Help me give my students at Echo Loder Elementary calming centers in 5 of our classrooms. Echo Loder is a Title 1 school, and many students face daily challenges that impact their ability to learn.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At Echo Loder Elementary, a Title 1 school where 100% of students receive free and reduced lunch, many of our students face challenges that impact their ability to focus, regulate their emotions, and engage in learning. When students become overwhelmed, they need a supportive space to regain control without leaving the classroom.
Our five classroom Calming Centers will provide a dedicated, safe space for students to self-regulate while remaining in class.
Rather than being sent out of the room when they feel anxious, frustrated, or dysregulated, students will have access to sensory tools and calming activities to help them refocus, reset, and return to learning. Research shows that self-regulation is a critical lifelong skill that enhances emotional resilience, academic performance, and overall well-being.
Each Calming Center will include a variety of social-emotional resources, such as fidget tools, mindfulness games, breathing exercises, and self-soothing activities. Soft, fuzzy rugs and tactile elements will make the space inviting and comfortable, encouraging students to practice healthy coping strategies in a way that feels natural and engaging. These tools will help students build the emotional awareness and regulation skills they need to navigate challenges both in school and in life.
