My Students

In my classroom, many students have a diverse background and have often experienced intense trauma in their home lives. Oaklawn is a school that has a well above average free-reduced lunch rate. Despite the diverse backgrounds, students are able to maintain their positive attitudes toward school and look forward to coming to school each day.

A classroom is a place for students to feel comfortable and successful.

The students are excited to come to school and be part of a classroom community where they are supported and celebrated.

My Project

My mission is to create a learning environment where every student is successful. By using flexible seating (choice seating every day), the students are able to be active and engaged in their learning. Many students also have attention problems, being able to move and change seating can eliminate the behavior issues that may arise.

Flexible seating in the classroom also helps to build a greater sense of community inside the classroom.

The students are able to arrange their seating in different ways to fit the needs of their learning. During our literacy block, students can pull their seats together so they are able to meet and discuss their book clubs. During math, the students are able to move around the classroom with a partner or in a small group to work together on a project.

My students will use the high tables and stools as a flexible seating option that will allow them the option to work either sitting or standing. The floor seats will be utilized during our literacy block and allow students to find a comfortable seat on the floor in our classroom. The wobble stools allow those students who have difficulty sitting still while working the opportunity to have movement while they are working.

I truly believe that these students deserve the opportunity to take ownership of their learning through flexible seating!

If given this opportunity, students would increase their engagement and build a stronger sense of community in the classroom.
