Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When did you first hear about the possibilities offered at college? Was it from a parent? A teacher? A friend? Imagine what would have happened had no one introduced the idea or opportunities college had to offer to you. For most of my students, no one has.

I teach fourth grade in a low-income urban elementary school in Texas.

All my students are English Language Learners and most are first generation immigrants. Very few students have had a member of their family or even someone close to them attend college.

My Project

One of the most powerful and profound experiences I have had with my students in my 9 years of teaching had absolutely nothing to do with books, paper, and pencils or reading, math, or writing. It happened when a box came with 25 t-shirts from 25 different universities. I can not put into words the attitude change I saw in my students. They looked up information about their college on the Internet and in books and then created pamphlets about their colleges to teach their classmates and other students in the school what they had learned. They shared their knowledge with their parents and siblings and, most importantly, they started talking about "WHEN I go to college" instead of "IF I go to college." I truly believe that a seed has been planted in these students and that they will pursue college in their futures. They would start their year in 4th grade knowing that everything we are working on is for a purpose - the first steps in getting ready for college.

If each of my students had a college shirt, they could begin to see the world of possibilities that were available to them.

They would not be simply researching their own college, but hearing about those of their classmates as well. Your donation to help us get these college t-shirts would be the first step in helping my students think about college as a real possibility. Thank you for your consideration.
