This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a proud Teacher-Mom at a Title 1(Low Income Households) school in Charlotte, NC. Our grade level is departmentalized and I have the privilege to impact the minds of 45, wonderful Kindergarteners. My babies are a direct reflection of me! Not only do I teach them math, I also teach them to take care of each other, along with other life skills. We have a scholar with a heart transplant and another one who has Epilepsy. The way that my scholars take care of their classmates, melts my heart daily. My scholars are caring, loving, kind, determined and eager to learn. The drive in their eyes and their will in their hearts to press on, ignites my teaching fire!
My Project
Most of my scholars live in low income households, so I personally, provide many of the resources needed in order for my scholars to be successful. Spending my own money as an educator, when I am barely compensated enough to provide for myself, is extremely challenging. I purchase food, snacks, clothes, and supplies monthly and sadly, I can no longer afford to do so. The Kindergarteners eat lunch at 10:40 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:15 p.m. So they are forced to go 3 hours without eating unless a snack is provided. Only three to five scholars bring a snack from home daily and it is heartbreaking to watch them, watch others eat. I have provided snack for as long as I can and I am asking for some helping hands! These five and six year olds mean the world to me and they deserve it all! Of course we can’t give them EVERYTHING, but we can start by giving them the basic nutrition needed to help fuel their brains and bodies. I am asking you to find it in your hearts to help my sweet, Kindergarten babies. They are our future, so let’s invest in them!
