Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school serves a very diverse population of students. Instructional decisions are data-driven, and the total school staff is devoted to every single student. Still, we struggle to successfully get all students performing on grade level. At the end of the 2007-08 school, our total school only had 67% of students meet grade level requirements. Students with disabilities, although showing high growth, trail behind their non-disabled peers in meeting grade level requirements. Many of these students are served alongside their peers in the regular classroom with the regular and special educator present. As the special educator for the school, my challenge is to assist in curriculum modifications and identify strategies and supports that will help students with disabilities better access the grade level curriculum and demonstrate mastery of skills.

The National Mathematics Advisory Panel recently published their final report, Foundations for Success, in which they repeatedly stressed the importance of teaching pre-algebra skills to elementary students, as students who complete Algebra II are more than twice as likely to graduate from college compared to students with less mathematical preparation. Also reported, and something every teacher can vouch for, is the need for automaticity with basic facts- the ability to fluently compute basic facts in all operations. As the standards for math change at the national and system level, it is imperative for teachers to develop their skills in the area and acquire necessary instructional materials.

The following materials will support my students and I in this area. Reference materials, including posters for Pre-Algebra sets and Algebra Readiness Bulletin Board will offer visual cues for my students in the regular classroom. Also, teacher instructional materials, such as Pre-Algebra Lessons & Skill for Success and Hands-On Pre-Algebra will give us new ideas about presenting important Pre-Algebra concepts. Additionally, fluency building exercises and activities, including Pre-Algebra flash cards, Nasco’s Pre-Algebra Bingo, Timed Math Facts (all operations), Timed Math Drill, Multiplication Country CD & Tape, Addition and Subtraction CD & tape, and Math Facts to the Max-Mastering the Basic Facts with Flash Cards and Songs will help build the automaticity so badly needed for these children to succeed, in an engaging manner.

As my colleagues and I research and implement strategies to address the changing standards in math, I hope that you will help us make the difference in these student’s lives. As elementary teachers, we must build a strong foundation for these students. The research is telling us that students must have the Pre-Algebra and automaticity; let’s make a difference!
