Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science! It's the subject that excites my above-level, on-level and below-level students and motivates students who have behavior issues to try their hardest. My students want to feel like scientists and with clipboards in hand and their own scientist notebooks, they will be ready to explore!

My 3rd grade students attend an urban school in Rhode Island.

Our school has students from grades kindergarten to grade 5. Our maximum class size is 26. We are a Title 1 school where over 90% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Most of my students come from low socio-economic households where English is the second language. I teach science to 52 students from 2 3rd grade classes. My students have diverse academic abilities and various levels of English language proficiency. Although my students have many challenges, science motivates them to learn and cooperate with their classmates. They are inquisitive and love to learn through exploration.

My Project

A typical science investigation in 3rd grade begins with establishing a focus question which drives our science lesson. We then collect data through science experiments and finally draw conclusions about what we have observed. The entire investigation is recorded by each student in their scientist notebook. It is important for each student to have the responsibility of maintaining their own science notebook. (3-ring binder). Students can refer to previous investigations to help them understand current lessons. By maintaining their own notebooks, 3rd graders learn responsibility and the importance of taking clear notes. Our 3rd grade curriculum focuses on Water, Light and Energy. We study the sun as an energy and light source. An example of an investigation of the sun may be a class trip outdoors to look at how the sun creates shadows. If each student had a clipboard, they would be able to record data on a notebook sheet while being mobile. This would be a valuable resource.

By each student having their own scientist notebook as well as a clipboard to facilitate their science investigations, my 3rd graders will feel like true scientists.

Their notebooks will, I believe, inspire them to take ownership of their learning.
