Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious and enthusiastic learners. They are natural scientists who love conducting hands-on experiments. They attend a Title One school, and live in one of the roughest neighborhoods in our city. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn when provided with the opportunity and resources. Our school offers a safe space for them to grow and flourish. We have an exceptionally strong social support system, with counselors working with small groups of students on an ongoing basis from grades six to twelve. This is to ensure they graduate from high school and enroll in college.

My goal is to create an exciting, positive, learning environment for my students to explore the world around them.

Most of my students come from homes where academic enrichment opportunities outside of school are limited. They truly appreciate any of the extras we can bring into the classroom.

My Project

During this uncharted time when NYC public schools are transitioning to a Remote Learning Model due to the Corona Virus or COVID-19, I saw a social media post requesting transparency sheets used with the old classroom overhead projectors since most have been phased out in favor of LCD projectors, SMART Boards and Promethean Activ Panels. They are being repurposed into 3D printed protective face shields for use by medical professionals working with potentially affected patients as well as those who have been confirmed positive. The idea for this product evolved organically and was executed quickly through the use of 3D printers.

3D printers can be an important tool in students’ repertoire for creating design solutions to a plethora of current problems that include health, climate and societal issues.

With the addition of these QIDI TECH 3D Printers, 2 ViewSonic 4K Monitors, laptops and filament to our Maker Space, my students will be able to engage in the engineering design process where they will select a real world problem they see and work collaboratively to solve the problem and create innovative solutions and products. My students will use 3D design software and work on designs together. They can each work on particular aspects of a bigger design, or they can each produce designs and then decide which designs to test. They will use the 3D printers to create prototypes for testing and further evaluations. This helps promotes effective design thinking, and focuses on achieving a shared collaborative goal.
