Every day, 30 energetic 4th graders enter our classroom ready to learn. The Common Core Standards require that students develop their skills in technology and collaboration. I also want to help them develop creativity in their problem-solving approaches and their thinking.
My school serves a diverse community of learners that are curious and dedicated problem solvers.
Some of my students come from affluent homes, but many do not. They are bright students full of potential and excitement for learning. I witness them becoming most engaged when they are involved in project-based team learning experiences.
My Project
Having a 3D printer in the classroom will provide my students with access to cutting-edge and innovative technology. 3D printing will provide my students with opportunities to think in multi-dimensions and gain practical experience with a technology that is becoming more and more mainstream in our world. Experience at this age will inspire students to pursue these fields as a potential career. 3D printing is currently being used in product development and bio-engineering. 3D printing requires deeper level thinking and helps develop grit and perseverance as students are required to plan, test, reflect and then rethink their projects. Perhaps my students will become doctors who are 3D printing bone replacements and improving the quality of life for our society.
