My Students

Students in my Project Potential (gifted) classroom are continually excited about learning, always wanting to take this learning to the next level. With our 3D printer, this learning has gone far beyond programming and problem-solving.

My fifth grade gifted students got the ball rolling this year when they wanted to investigate 3D printing for our classroom.

Learning about applications in medical and industrial fields, students selected the Flash Forge printer, and helped prepare a successful proposal for Donors Choose. This 3D printer project fueled students' problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills into the realm of "4D learning," moving us all to the next level. Students are now teaching our 6th and 4th grade students how to program the printer. In April, we held a "Technology Open House," with students inviting nearly 300 peers to learn about this new technology. When school begins in August, these Project Potential students would like to share this learning with the entire school, preparing presentations that they will take into other classrooms. Essentially, our 3D printer project has taken "4D" mode.

My Project

My project potential students in grades 4 through 6 would like to share the 3D printer technology with students in homeroom classes. They will be developing 3D printer program builds and presentations that they will share with students at multiple grade levels. We are requesting an assortment of 3D filaments so that students may share the objects created with others during these mini-workshops. With each new 3D print that students make, we all learn something new. As they record data on printing times and materials used, critique the finished objects, edit the programs; every day brings new learning. Our funding request includes new types of filament that will allow students to create, explore, and develop expanded projects, including flexible filaments used for things like phone cases and wristbands.

Encouraging students to engage with technology helps them to develop the problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills that are essential for success in the 21st century.

Working with the 3D printer inspires and engages students in new learning, helping them to see the world around them in new and exciting ways. Sharing this learning with peers moves us all toward "4D" learning!
