Middle school is a time of exploration! My students spend quality time figuring out what they’re passionate about today and how that relates to who they’ll become tomorrow. The hands-on lessons that I provide in my STEM class have made a huge impact on the culture of my students. It provides the ability for the students to critically think on their own, with their peers, and has increased their self-confidence tremendously. My students feel confident when they are able to come up with an answer or test possibilities on their own.
Motivating students is one of the biggest jobs in teaching. It’s important that they learn to do technical drawings and to use the creative software, but when you make it come to life with the 3D printer and they can touch it and feel it, they want to do more and learn more.
To be able to draw or sketch a 3D image using software, then physically create the output of their designs is a tremendous complement to their learning.
3D printers in the schools help students think creatively. It’s a whole new medium with a new range of possibilities. When we use tools like the 3D printer, I can tell students are really interested in the design and modeling of their creations. At the middle school level, this can really help students focus on possible careers for their future or changes they want to make in this world for their future. In that way, the printer helps them envision their futures as well as their designs.
