My Students

My students are a curious, hands-on group. They like to investigate not only the what, but also the why. They frequently push the academic and classroom limits in search of learning. This has allowed me to develop an environment where learning and questioning in encouraged and repeat students are frequent. Atypical and unconventional thinking is typical and the classroom norm.

My Project

In our Introduction to Engineering course, students develop a product from idea through to prototyping and testing.

This 3D printer is a tool that will allow my students to build their ideas into reality so that they can test and revise the plan into a workable item.

Students begin the product development project with an idea to fulfill a need. Students then problem solve, with members of their group, on how to create a solution. They develop a solution to the problem and build a prototype solution. The prototype solution is then tested to determine how well it works and where it will need to be improved. Students revise their prototype and test the new version. The process is repeated until students either are completely satisfied, feel that the revisions are beyond the scope of what can be done in the classroom, or run out of time.

Adding 3D printing capabilities will allow students not only more freedom and options for prototyping, but also allow for quicker work. This would, in turn, allow for more development cycles and also expand the capabilities of what is possible in the classroom setting.
