3D Print Lab- Learning to Print for the Blind

Help me give my students the materials they need to run our 3D printers. Our machines run every day, all day and parts wear out. These materials will help us deal with wear and tear in 2024.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project is for extruders and PLA plastic- the consumable parts of 3D printers. We have worked hard to get our four 3D printers, but since they are used so much the parts wear out. Every 2 months or so we need to put in a new extruder. If we run out- that machine is no longer useable. These parts will help us start the new school year knowing we have enough parts to keep everything running. Additionally the plastic ensures we wont run out of material to print. The bright colors are important since we will be partially printing for students with limited vision.

In 2024 our print lab is starting a service learning project with our visually impaired students- printing tools to help the blind and visually impaired experience more objects.

I will be working to teach my sighted students about the experiences and needs of those with visual impairments. As students learn about how to 3D print they will work on projects to make tools for those students with limited vision. This can include stencils, models they can touch to experience 'seeing' something and adaptive games. Students will have to put themselves in the shoes of others in this project and be able to get feedback from those students they are creating for. They will learn to consider the needs of others living with different needs. I will measure success in the project by having students independently identify a tool they can make and explaining how it will help someone with limited or no vision.
