This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Was there a point in your school career where you got to a level of math that just baffled you? Did you look at the board, and then at your teacher, and feel like he or she was speaking only Russian, while you spoke only English? My students feel that way every day.
I teach math to special education students in a 100 percent special education school.
Over the years, my students have missed chunks of basic material because they weren't ready to learn, because they were hospitalized, because they had to leave the classroom because of a problem. My students struggle with basic tasks--like paying attention--but they are expected to succeed on the same tests that regular education students sometimes struggle with.
My Project
I have been working with students trying to get them to visualize math in three dimensions. But many of my students can't visualize a two-dimensional drawing as a three-dimensional object. With a set of 3Doodler pens, we could draw our problems in three dimensions. Imagine what (a + b) x (c + d + e) x (f + g) would look like if each segment appeared in three dimensions. Suddenly, students would be able to see section acf and section bdg. They would be able to model these expressions themselves! If you can draw it yourself, if you can hold it in your hands, not just see a two-dimensional drawing, suddenly math can come alive!
My students have incredible challenges in their lives, including how to comprehend what may seem simple to other people.
This could help them understand math as a dimensional, fascinating discipline that has beauty and use in their everyday lives. Please help me help them to understand. Thank you!
