I teach at a Title I school where approximately 20% of my students are Native American. My school is one of the few schools in the district to offer a Native curriculum. More than 50% of the students are on free or reduced-price lunch and 10% are homeless; many of the students have experienced some kind of trauma.
My students have vivid imaginations and love to express themselves creatively.
These students also have an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, and their perseverance and exuberance astonishes me every day.
My Project
With your help, this year's third graders will create 3D pop-up box cards to represent their answer to the statement, "If I saved 25 cents a week, I could buy ... in a year." The third graders will use their numerical prowess to reason through how much money they would save and then use the internet to research items they could buy within that budget. The magnets are to help students visualize the amount of money in their budget. Students will locate images of the items and resize the items to print on the color printer, and then they will cut out the images. The Cricut machine will cut out and score the template for the 3D pop-up box card, which the students will assemble together and decorate with their cut-out images.
This project will challenge students to make choices within a budget and utilize technology to create their own representation of their choices.
