My Students
My students and their families have gone through many changes this year. We began with some students going fully remote and with some in-person learners. About two months later, we switched to a hybrid model and then switched to everyone being fully remote approximately three weeks later. With all of these changes, one can only imagine the confusion caused for all students.
My 1st-grade students are ready to get back into the classroom!
They miss being around their classmates and having those small connections with them and the staff.
My Project
In February, our 1st graders will be doing a writing prompt about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman to become an astronaut. The students will learn about her life and some facts about rockets in space as well. The students will also discuss what they understand about life in space and life on earth.
As a final project for our lesson on Mae Jemison, I would like to bring in a toy rocket launcher designed to give children the experience of launching something into the sky.
They will be able to adjust the angle of the launcher and the amount of pressure they need to put on the launcher to get the rocket to go far.
I am also asking for clear tape so that my students can draw and tape designs to their individual rockets. The stickers that are being requested are for them to wear on their clothes like a badge during the launching exercises. This follow up activity can also become a great writing assignment!
