Help me give my students an outer space themed dramatic play area that includes astronaut costumes, outer space view finders, a rocket ship to blast off in, and other items to support learning about the solar system.
My classroom consists of 22 students who are ages four and five and are all coming to school for the very first time. While I work daily to expose them to letters, numbers, shapes, and colors, they are learning far more than just academics. Each day, they are learning to socialize with peers by sharing, problem solving, cooperating, and even contributing to a class. They come each day to gain a sense of who they are away from home and learn best through movement, play, and interactions with their peers.
In my experience, by allowing students to learn through imaginative play and social experiences, they are more well rounded and prepared for their future kindergarten experience.
My Project
In preschool, my four and five year old students learn best by exploration through play. By setting up real life experiences in which they can discover, role play, and work together, the best possible learning outcomes can occur.
This outer space themed dramatic play will include learning objectives from math, literacy, social studies, and science, all while creating an excitement for learning.
Students will be able to play the role of a real live astronaut, blasting off in the rocket ship while wearing all the appropriate gear. What better place to cozy up with a book or puzzle about outer space than the rocket! Students can get an up close look at the solar system by using the view finders. They will see photos of the sun, moon, stars, and planets, along with learning interesting facts about each.
For those who enjoy a more hands-on approach to learning, they may find themselves in the sensory bin filled with moon dough and astronauts, vehicles, and space equipment.
These materials would give my students a complete unit to learn out our solar system with all the necessary materials that are age appropriate for preschool.
