Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Get our low-income students reading at home and school! These magical books are inspiring, fun, and most importantly motivating. With the gift of these books, students can take them home overnight and share with their families, further bridging the gap between parent and teacher involvement.

My students are 20 second graders from diverse backgrounds and low-income families that LOVE TO LEARN!

This is their first year together in a new charter school in Paterson, NJ, and they can't take their hands off books. About half the students have learned to read just this year. The students are energetic and love to tell knock-knock jokes. When they read, they love to read with accents which is why Tomie DePaola's Italian characters are perfect to read!

My Project

These books will be featured in an author study on Tomie DePaola. The books, which are in multiple copies, will be used for small groups to read together, to bring home to read to their families, and to complete comprehension activities here at school. They are all also featured as Accelerated Reader quizzes, which is an important resource we use here at our charter school.

My project is important because author studies have been successful everywhere throughout the country.

They get students motivated to choose books written by that author, even by visiting their local libraries with parents. I believe these students never had a chance to participate in a successful author study, and I would love to be the first teacher to do so.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
