My Students

Since we are located near two military bases, many of my sixth grade students are the children of deployed military personnel. They live in an area that is a pocket of poverty and they are handicapped by a lack of resources. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Our school is an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. The public library that was across the street closed several years ago.

Our school is not a Title I School, but my students have needs that are not being met by our school.

The majority of my kids do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school.

I have a very transient student population and a number of my students are homeless or live in shelters. Over 50% of my class comes and goes during the course of the school year. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them.

My Project

My students need to acquire the skills they need to be successful in life. We had some old computers in our classroom but our technology department told me that they could no longer support them. I am asking for five Samsung Chromebooks that my students can use in our classroom and after school to use Goggle Docs and work on a math/stock market project and coding. These Chromebooks are not just technology. They are actually more like an essential supplies. I desperately need a few Chromebooks to help my students and replace some old computers that don't work anymore.

Twenty years ago, I would have asked for pencils but today, my students need up-to-date computer access inside and outside of school for their projects.

The support of donors would have an immediate positive impact on the lives of these terrific kids. Our school lacks many resources. This severely handicaps my students. I plan to form A Dream Big Computer Club so my students can learn about coding and work on class projects (AKA homework) after school. I am asking for college students to come and help them. I want to help them dream of college and be prepared. I want them to dream of a better life. Help me to help them.
