Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

Our students are full of heart and hope. They are ethnically diverse, inner-city students from across Los Angeles. Seventy percent are bused to my school and travel far to get a quality education. We want to inspire them with content that is connected to their lives and helps them build 21st century skills.

We want to empower students to shape their destinies and futures with a technologically and arts rich environment. I hope you will consider supporting this project and helping build artistic and technical literacy through using more computers in our classroom. Our students often need more technology resources than our school currently has. The computers we currently have are outdated, and the laptop cart we have access to has only 30 computers, while our largest class has 37 students, meaning that some are left out or need to double up, not enabling them to participate in our curriculum in the same rich way as others. By adding additional computers to our class, we hope to bridge the gap and allow students more access to updated technology that will enrich their experience.

We want to update our classroom into the 21st century and provide a technologically and artistically rich teaching and learning environment. The MacBook computers will be used to update our curriculum to be more relevant to today's college and career needs. Through it, we will be able to have lessons that engage students with a variety of different STEAM, interdisciplinary learning opportunities. We want to integrate arts and design as students experiment with apps, podcasts and blogs, whether using them or having students respond to and create their own. We want to learn how to use storytelling podcasts like the Moth and photojournalism like New York Times Photos of the Day to capture the human experience through digital media. We hope to update our classroom by learning how to bring in additional sources of real-world learning curriculum, including digital media to engage students in new and exciting ways. These computers will be a powerful resource and bridge to allow us to do so.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to achieve a fun and interactive environment for our classmates through the use of technology in our classroom. We are also aiming for expanding the skill set of our peers for writing clean and professional letters and essays on the computer. As students we want to have an environment that improves our skills in interactive ways.

Encouraging and capturing our fellow students' interest would be the first step for this project. This can be done through working with our teacher to design lessons that include art and photography to teach skills. Additionally, we would show examples and demos of what projects and activities that we could possibly do with technology in the class. We want to be a part of this exciting adventure in technology in the classroom.

Personally, this is a great opportunity for us to learn new techniques and skills using technology. This would also solve the many issues or questions that some of our peers might find with typing a letter or essay on the computer. This not only expands our learning environment but will also prepare us to write professionally and effectively on the computer.
