This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
21st Century Collaboration! Help us learn 21th Century technology skills while mastering Common Core Standards and having fun!
Our students are enthusiastic learners at the only California Distinguished School in our district's recent history.
In the past few years, many of our students have met and exceeded California Standards assessment goals and they're on target to do so again this year. A large percentage of our student population is socio-economically disadvantaged (86% free/reduced rate lunch), so students don't necessarily have access to the technology of their counterparts in other areas of California. The students who will be impacted by "21st Century Collaboration!" are 2nd graders. They will work in groups to complete the project and present their projects at Open House in June.
My Project
The purpose of 21st Century Collaboration is to provide our students the basics of 21st century skills. The Android tablet and cover we are requesting will give students an introduction to the Framework for 21st Century Learning and ISTE Student Technology Standards emphasizing collaboration, creativity, research, critical thinking, communication, and technology use. The tablet will promote increased engagement and provide motivation, too. This project takes learning BEYOND THE BOOKS. First, students collaborate to research interactive sites about life cycles. Next, they write paragraphs and instantly co-edit as the tablets provide direct feedback about grammar and spelling. Finally, they use the tablet to record their voices reading the paragraphs. Upon playback, they immediately hear and track their increasing reading fluency on the tablets. Four main goals, which align to our current content standards, are met within this project: research, writing, editing, and reading for fluency.
Our teachers and administrators wish to grow our students' technological awareness.
We recently received a grant to purchase a few tablets for 2nd grade. I have also sought assistance to purchase tablets from local large and small businesses but have not yet received any additional funds. Your donation would help our students take a giant step toward preparing them for the future of technology.
