This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Do not, then, my friend, keep children to their studies by compulsion but by play. That will also better enable you to discern the natural capacities of each.” - Plato My students thrive from exposer to simulation-based games that present them with complex, analytic problems to solve.

My 5th grade classroom is filled throughout the day with a collective group of 90 curious, vibrant, and enthusiastic students who thrive off of challenge, movement, and technology.

My students face many hardships in their lives, from poverty to the ever-daunting achievement gap, yet they never waiver from our core set of classroom principles: grit, integrity, and commitment to continuous growth. Our school is special in that it is a dual-language elementary and is the lowest SES school in our district with 78% of our students who are economically disadvantaged. Because of the variety of needs of the student body, it is pertinent that we provide ample opportunities during the school day that expose them to higher level inquiry, problem solving, and hands-on learning. Our hardworking staff supports student learning through special programs, counseling services, and other every day necessities.

My Project

With these materials, our students will have access to the simulation-based games from Breakout EDU (breakoutedu.com). These student-centered games are aligned with the school’s curriculum in all subject areas. Stimulating and collaborative, Breakout EDU’s activities support full student engagement and participation. Students are challenged to utilize logic, creativity, and communication to solve a series of intricate tasks and puzzles. Every task leads them towards the ultimate goal of opening the Breakout Box. Throughout the game a multitude of cognitive tasks are assigned providing students with specific roles involving written work, researching information online, using geographic and mathematical concepts, artistic representations, and much more.

With the help of your donation, you will provide my students with life-long skills in collaboration, stamina, and a new use of modern technologies.

As our students leave for middle school, I want to make sure that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to achieve their future educational and career goals. With this gift, my students will come away with a whole new style of learning, a sense of community, and will be well versed in the application of current technologies.
