Help me give my students the reading tools and classroom supplies they need to further develop their skills and be successful, as well as the teacher tools I need to guide them!
I'm blown away every single day by how hard my 13 students with Special Needs work. Our class is made up of Mild/Moderate learners with needs ranging from Autism to language disorders, emotional disabilities to ADHD.
Despite the economic, social, and academic hardships that my students must face day in and day out, they manage to stay positive and determined to show growth in all areas.
My students are supportive and kind to one another. I've been told multiple times... this class is one big & amazing family!
My Project
Now that I've gotten to know my 13 students' specific needs and styles-specifically, in regards to literacy skills, Room 21 needs the tools to help students meet goals.
Resources that assist students in building and using critical thinking skills, beyond the mandatory "curriculum," would benefit my students greatly!
The majority of my 4th and 5th graders have Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals of increasing their reading comprehension skills, as well as goals around social/self awareness.
Although many of my students have sufficient reading fluency levels, their comprehension is low... causing them to be stuck at early-elementary levels. When used in reading groups, the Scholastic Magazines are excellent for engaging learners with topics they can relate to and that call for deeper thinking.
