Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During the last eight weeks of my students' senior year, we work on a project known as "The Senior Memory Book." This book consists of seventeen chapters written by the student on their life in the past, present and future. The chapters are put into scrapbooks and each chapter must be illustrated with pictures or other memorabilia that is appropriate for that particular chapter. Many of my students come from families that exist well below the poverty line. At our school, senior year can be very expensive. I would like to provide some scrapbooks and decorating supplies for my students.
This year, I will have over 100 students working on this project. It has been so successful and has grown in popularity so much that new students start talking about the book as soon as they begin their senior year! The book, while honing their writing skills, also allows the student to examine their past and reflect on the future. When the project is complete for the student, the book becomes an amazing artifact that the student will treasure for years to come.
