My Project

The grant provides a wonderful opportunity to introduce to my students the ability to explore structural engineering. Students will create large wearable 3D paper mache big head sculptures. Variables students will consider are stabilization systems and balance that help to combat swaying and bobbling while walking, how viscosity and opacity affects the flow and cover of acrylic paint, and how various length of cardboard can aid in stress distribution. Students will also consider how structural engineers use holes and cutouts for ventilation, balance and the weight of structures, and stress distribution in architecture. Middle school STEAM students will develop critical problem solving skills by exploring physical science and critiquing the results.
