My school is located in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is a Title 1 school in a low-income, urban community. Most students do not have necessary materials for school which makes school difficult for them. Many of my current students are not fortunate to have computers at home.
My students are wonderful kids that work hard in school but are faced with many challenges and obstacles both in and out of the classroom.
Even with the support and help from other teachers and the families sometimes our students are not equipped with the proper materials to help enhance their education.
Many of my first graders have not even been exposed to an educational experience in pre-school or kindergarten. This coupled with the lack of supplies and materials that other students have, puts my students at a disadvantage. As their teacher, it is my job to create an environment that can foster a love of learning and enhance their academic growth.
My Project
Students learn at many different rates these days. Guided reading and guided math are unique and valuable times for teachers to hone in and deliver that special instruction. During station rotation, I have a variety of centers in my room designed for math and reading centers. My students love this time. One special center, i-Ready, is a favorite for everyone. It is a time for them to receive individualized math and reading lessons based on their specific needs.
If my project is funded, I would be able to incorporate i-Ready on a daily basis into my Station Rotation for Guided Reading and Math!
Each time a student passes a lesson in i-Ready, the program automatically adjusts the lessons based on the student's needs. This is crucial in the academic development of the student. Currently, I can only do i-Ready once or twice a week due to a shortage of computers.
