Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are inquisitive and eagar learners. They are incredibly excited about the new program just delivered for them to explore 16 different career pathways. This new program will allow for my students to research and gain practical skills by engaging with the materials connected to the particular career pathway they are exploring, as if they are doing the job!. My students value this type of learning, and are excited to work directly with the tools of the trades. While we have the materials necessary, I have no storage system to keep these materials organized. For example, the students will explore veteranary medicine, but I cannot keep stethescopes, sutures, etc. on their desks. They will explore culinary arts, but I need a place to store cooking materials. The same with the health and nutrition resources, the electricity, enginering resources, etc. My students understand the benefits of this type of learning and how they can apply what they will learn to building a career pathway connected to the courses they take in high school, and beyond.
My Project
I am teaching in the "Classic" model. Our students are in-school, unless the number of COVID cases are too high. The materials for which I am seeking an organization system are for students to use in the physical classroom setting. We are working hard, at our school, to ensure that our students have every opportunity to become among the first college or technical school graduates in their families - that they will gain pathways to obtain successful careers as they enter adulthood. To this end, my classes were just funded for a new and exciting course through Paxton Patterson Learning Systems. The course is built around 16 different career pathways. Students deeply explore different potential careers by engaging in real-life, hands-on learning experiences. The pathways include: Mechanisms, Life Time Nutrition and Wellness, Structural Engineering, Pneumatics, Virtual Architecture, Into to Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Personal Finance, Electricity and Electronics, CAD, Alternative Energy and more. The curriculum includes all of the resources for students to work with hand-on tools of the trade. For example, in the Alternative Energy Module students have supplies such as: 6 blade shafts
6 turbine blades
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Plexiglass template
Pencil
Safety glasses
Electric fan
KidWind turbine model
Wind Turbine
Generator
6 turbine blades
Blade pitch protractor
Meter stick
Digital multimeter
Red & black banana
plug-to-alligator clip
jumpers
Blue LED light
Fuel Cell Car
Battery pack
Stopwatch
Test leads
Water syringe
Distilled water
All of these supplies need a make-sense storage system. At present, I only have a few storage containers. I want for this to be a class that fuels and excites students to want to keep on learning and serves as a vision for how they might navigate a career pathway toward a rewarding and enjoyable career in a very organized system of instruction.
