To be able to work with so many students from so many different cultural and religious backgrounds is something that I have never experienced prior to working at my school; as a student, or as a teacher! Every single day I see my students walk into class, it brings a smile to my heart that fuels me to continue to grow and be better each day. As the Health and Weight Training teacher, that can also be difficult while understanding where they are coming from for mental/emotional health, social health, and physical health, and trying to help each student find their way to total health!
With that being said, one aspect of what I do is to get these students to be more physically active!
Many of our students just don't know how to move properly, haven't been given the opportunity to be physically active, or the age of technology that we are in keeps them in their bubble of phones and video games! I am working on changing up the culture of our school and community to help everyone understand that with a healthy body, comes a healthy mind, and vice versa!
My Project
Being the weight training teacher, my goal is to get as many students to learn how to functionally move their body to best of their ability, especially because many of them haven't been given the opportunity to learn, to have been taught, or just afraid to try something like weight training. I want to make this class accessible to everyone that has the desire to learn how their body moves, without something thinking they can't based on gender, strength, accessibility, language, or anything else. Everything that I can add to our weight room to help everyone feel successful is necessary. Never do I want to exclude anyone from wanting to be physically active.
With these 15 pound barbells, it will give these students the confidence to move better, and to be able to have the data to back up the growth that they want to see with their weight training!
We do lots of different functional fitness movements in this class, and many incorporate a barbell for strength and stamina building. We only have 45 pound bars, and for many movements students feel intimidated by these bars and are unable to participate in some of the workouts that we have because the weight is too much. There are plenty of modifications that can and have been done for these students this year, but the more accessible we can make it for the students, the more excited they will be that they are able to be doing the same thing as the class!
Some examples of movements that these bars will be used for are clean and jerks, snatches, strict press, push press, bench press, dead lift, and squatting.
