If you walked by my classroom to peer inside you would hear us before you would see us actively participating in Science, with all hands on deck.
I teach students in the eighth grade.
Our school is in a small rural community in Ohio. I have a very bright, curious and introspective group of students who care about their community and the earth that their community rests inside. Eighth grade is all about Earth Science and I want to be able to "Teach for the Planet," and inspire sustainability.
My Project
I have requested a Seismometer and Tectonic Sandbox. We want desperately to be able to monitor earthquake activity. In Ohio? Yes, in Ohio. Hydraulic Fracturing is "booming," in Ohio and inquiring minds want to know if the disposal of waste water, or the byproduct of "fracking,"is the culprit.
Imagine what it would feel like to be part of the discussion about the sustainability of fossil fuels and the cost versus the benefit of using hydraulic fracturing to obtain those fuels.
Further imagine students able to use data they collected about earthquake activity with a school seismometer to support their argument. This would be true citizen science in action and would help build our future army of earth monitors to protect the planet.
