Math! For many of us, it is such a challenge! In Kindergarten we are building a foundation for all skills, especially math. My students need to have a solid foundation and understanding of number sense. To do this, they need to have a variety of manipulative's to explore.
Our school has a half day kindergarten with a morning class made up of 28 students and an afternoon class including 29 students.
We have deaf and hard of hearing students in our afternoon class as well.
My students come from a variety of cultures and ethnicity's. I have students ranging in skills, socio-economics, and disabilities. My students are eager and ready to learn. Typically they have not attended preschool and kindergarten is their first school experience. My goal is to make it a positive one, providing a solid foundation for their academic career.
I have students learning to speak English, learning American Sign Language (ASL) and all of them are learning together. The resources are limited in our area and funds are tight amongst families.
My Project
My students must have a strong sense of number concept to lay a solid foundation for their educational careers. The Common Core State Standards states they must count objects to 20 using one to one correspondence, solve addition and subtraction story problems to 10 and decompose numbers to 10, and compose or decompose numbers 11-19.
These are all skills that require an understanding of numbers, their patterns, and knowledge of tools available to be used. My students have to learn how to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Using manipulative's and games are ways they can make connections between math and their lives, as well as the world around them.
My students need the skills as well as the socialization. It is important to keep in mind that they are 5 and 6 years old. They are still learning how to solve problems with peers, play fairly and accept others' strengths and weaknesses.
These tools are a good way to set the students up for success in all areas.
My students are an amazing group of hard working, kind and ready to learn kindergartners!
They take on any challenge and love to explore the possibilities! Manipulative's, games and tools would help them to make connections to the world around them, develop their language and vocabulary, as well as develop a solid foundation in math. Please help us get some manipulative's and games to enjoy and learn with! Thank you!
