Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with an incredible group of 10th grade students in an urban school district. My students are energetic and engaged learners, and they love to collaborate with one another and to discuss their ideas. My students constantly reflect on their academic work, their contributions to the school community, and their work ethic. My students come from low income backgrounds, and for them school is a safe environment where they can grow as scholars, citizens, and community members.

This year, I have been working with my students to help them see themselves as readers.

Many of my students struggle with reading or merely find it to be tedious task; my goal is to help shift their mindset!

Each week, we have one day devoted to independent reading. As they complete the books of their choice, students are tasked with writing a review to share with the world through a classroom blog.

My Project

In order to support my students' literacy skills, I am hoping to grow our classroom library to ensure all students have engaging books at their level. Many of my students are learning English as a second language or read below grade level and benefit from having a large variety of texts that reflect their unique interests and skills.

I hope that together we can build a classroom library as diverse and varied as my students.

The importance of access to a text-rich classroom cannot be underestimated: research supports that consistent, sustained reading grows fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension; all critical for ensuring my students are prepared for college and career.
