Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In first grade we have been counting everything we can, including the days of school. In February we will celebrate the 100th day of school. At this age one of the most crucial understanding for children to develop is a sense of place value. First grade students are learning the difference between ones, tens, and hundreds. I would like to help the children celebrate one hundred days of school with some great 100s books and by having them count to 100 many times and many ways. We will bake 100 cookies, see how far 100 steps will take us, sit still for 100 seconds, and pop 100 balloons. We will also count to 100 by 2s, 5s and 10s to name a few. For each pair of students in my class, I would like to purchase a set of transparent 100 holders for Digi blocks. Digi blocks help facilitate students' understanding of the concepts of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands. Also, they will use these blocks to gain a conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction with regrouping. Students gain even stronger conceptual understandings when the concepts they are studying are integrated across the curriculum. In order to support our study of this crucial mathematical concept, I would like to purchase some books, activity guides and manipulatives that relate to the 100th day of school or the number one hundred.
