Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher with a class of 12 very lovable first grade students. I have students with Down Syndrome, seizure disorders, and mental impairments. My students love hugs, high fives, feeling a sense of accomplishment, and anything hands-on. These students are amazing. We do not get as many resources as other classrooms because many adults think "they can't do it."
I teach in a low income area and our school is low on funds. There is no money available for my classroom. We don't have a math curriculum and so I create materials for my students to use. The materials I have requested hit on some key skills that my students need to learn (number recognition, sorting, addition, comparing, classifying) . Although all of the students in my classroom are "special ed" - - they are bright and deserve materials that they enjoy learning with.
I have found some materials from Lakeshore that my students will enjoy using. These materials will give them hands-on practice with materials and activities that will put smiles on their faces! With the skills they will learn using these materials, the doors will be opened to them. They will be able to learn higher level skills that their non-disabled peers are learning.
My students touch the lives of everyone they meet. They do not conceal their motives, hide their emotions, or care about anything superficial. When my kids are motivated and enjoy what they are doing, they can learn more than many think they are capable of! My students are tired of my hand-made activities and deserve new, colorful, exciting materials that they will enjoy using. Help our class get materials that will help us learn important math skills!
