Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My most memorable moments as a student were creating projects with peers. As a techy-teacher I have an appreciation for the various options my students have in creating projects. With the plethora of technology available today, students have a chance to learn, be engaged, and create these memories.

I have the greatest students in the world.

I teach a Reading Intervention class with 9th grade students who are all eager and ambitious to raise their below-level reading scores. None of my students have given up, knowing that they face a difficult challenge of raising their reading level. They trust what we do in class to help them. My students have faced several challenges in their home lives, but have an understanding of their current goals and the goal of higher education (many will be the first in their families to achieve this goal). My students enjoy dynamic learning. They are readers, thinkers, writers, and doers. Despite their individual goals, they know that our classroom success is dependent on the achievement of their groups. Our School is in a low-income community in southern California. Although our school has had some renovations, we are lacking smaller resource materials that will get students engaged in learning.

My Project

My students need technology resources that are currently unavailable at our site. My students need a set of video cameras to aide them in developing their listening/speaking skills. In our class we stress the link between reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These cameras will provide my students with the ability to create presentations, practice recitations, and learn vocabulary skills. These are all of significance because many of my students are English Language Learners and have trouble making the connection between a spoken language and written word. The students will be creating "Video Vocabulary" forums in groups. The students will create skits for essential terms from the selection and act them out. Students will then edit their projects and create a Class Video Vocabulary Study study page. Students will learn vocabulary skills, language skills, computer software, and skills required for group work.

Many of my students have a poor perception of learning and school.

My goal is to change that by showing them how learning is key to growing as a person. Engaging students with activities that get to the core of learning is what defines education today am hoping that this project will show my students how to enjoy learning, and why we are learning. These videos should show them how language conventions are used.
