My Students

Have you ever seen the ocean or walked on a beach? Imagine the look on an 11 year old's face when seeing the ocean and walking on the beach for the FIRST time!

These upstate South Carolina fifth graders have a love for hands-on, real world learning.

While they attend a title 1 elementary school that does its best to provide for all of their needs, many of them have never traveled outside of our town, and several have never had first hand experiences at the coast.

My Project

Providing funds for this Barrier Island Environmental Education Program would change the lives of two of my students in fifth grade. This program allows students to walk in a salt marsh to a mud-pit, explore the woodlands, swim in an estuary, and watch dolphins and other wildlife! Students get in touch with Science in a hands-on way as they use large nets and teamwork to catch small fish and ocean creatures. They work cooperatively with teams to get through group challenges. Students are also taught the value of reducing, reusing, and recycling to conserve our resources and take care of the natural world around us. This field trip is an opportunity for rising middle school students to experience a bit of independence too as they are away from home for two nights.

Donating to "Barrier Island or Bust" would allow deserving students the opportunity of a lifetime.

These students will see the beach for the very first time while learning about the world in which they live. Three days and two nights on a barrier island in South Carolina will give fifth graders the real world, hands-on learning that they will remember for years to come.
