My Students

My students started the Latinos Unidos Club for Education this year. The club offers free tutoring services to struggling students, sponsors guest speakers to serve as role models, and is working on scheduling college visits to motivate Hispanic students (working on closing the achievement gap).

My students are Hispanic students that come from working class families.

They are, in most cases, first generation born American and first to have the opportunity to go to college. Many of them come in their freshmen year struggling academically, but through the support of the LUCE club (Latinos Unidos Club for Education), Spanish Speakers program, AP Spanish class, they are getting the academic, social, and community support they need to be successful, not only at VHS but in life after high school.

My Project

My students have helped create the LUCE club and are in positions of power (co-chairs, treasurer, secretary, etc.) that will foster leadership qualities and create a better connection between the Latino student population and the staff of VHS. One of the ways to keep communicating the philosophy of the club through club meetings, tutoring center services, guest speakers, and college visits, is by designing and maintaining a LUCE club webpage. We are in need of a good camera that lets us record the club activities through pictures and video, as to create a history of the club year after year. Also, we keep information flowing to all the members of coming events and providing them with information to careers, colleges, and other school related resources.

The LUCE club's project is important because it would be through a well documented history of the many accomplishments that the club will do over the years that the members/officers will leave a legacy to the young ones coming up to the high school level from all the elementary school in our school district.
