My Students

In this age of mind numbing technology students are quicker to pick up a game controller, or the remote control, than dive into a good book. My students need reading materials exciting enough, "You Choose Interactive” adventures, which are interesting enough to compete with the allure of technology.

The social-economics of my school is title one (impoverish).

However, other schools in my district rate with a higher overall percentile (>71%) of impoverished students which garnishes those schools with additional funding. This funding shortfall, beyond what I as a teacher can afford to provide, leaves my students to fend for themselves in pursuing interesting reading material. Unfortunately these latch-key children, sometimes immigrant, and all too often single parent homes will find the financial situation at home no better to provide quality reading material.

My Project

The You Choose Interactive (adventure) books follow a primary fictional character through a true historical event. What’s unique and so engaging for students is that the reader becomes the primary character by making the decisions of the primary character. The primary character “Chuck” may face a decision when assisting an escaped slave “Joe” via the Underground Railroad. For example, after reading a passage the reader is presented with options for the primary character. Should Chuck lead Joe through the woods? Turn to page 53. Or, should Chuck and Joe travel quickly by stage coach? Turn to page 62. Based on the reader’s decision, the stories outcome will change directions; characters may face ruin, or successfully navigate all of the challenges presented. Each one of these brilliantly written books provides more than twenty stories in one book due to all the combinations of decisions the reader can make.

Of all the skills that we can teach students, I feel that reading is most important.

Reading can unlock the doors to mathematics, science, physical education, and so much more, but not one of the previous mentioned skills can unlock reading. If my students can develop a love for reading, thus improving this valuable skill, then every door to their future is unlocked and wide open. From previous experience, these books get children excited to read, but our school library has lacked the quantity to keep the fire of interest alive while we have it. By funding this grant I will be able to provide the necessary quantity for the fifth grade.
