Salmon and Me: My Personal Journal

My students need a rug, books and Science journals.

My Students

Young children are curious and want to know so much about the world around them. Science is a way to satisfy that curiosity. Our first unit involves learning about the life cycle, characteristics, and different species of salmon. A field trip to a local beach is planned for hands-on experience.

My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Approximately a third of my students are English language learners; Spanish is their native language. They all work well together and seem to enjoy all the learning we are doing in class. My students are very motivated; with that I try to provide engaging and rigorous instruction. Our school has a broad range of learners. Different classrooms accommodate students with emotional/behavioral challenges, English language learners, highly capable, and high-achieving students. In addition to concentrating hard on math and literacy, I am creatively combining different subject areas. For example, they incorporate science and social studies content into writing assignments. A math lesson may get an art twist.

My Project

The informational texts I have requested will support my instructional strategies to provide effective, accurate and purposeful background knowledge prior to our field trip to study salmon. The science journals will allow students to capture their observations. My plan is to foster discovery through observation of a salmon's life cycle. Our school has purchased salmon eggs and a fish tank and I plan to have students observe and note their observations as these salmon go through the different stages. Because I believe that young children are naturally curious, my goal for students with this unit is for them to become better questioners, observers, and thinkers. Allowing them to record their observations in the science journals will help lay the groundwork for future science inquiry and understandings. The carpet with colored dots will help us organize ourselves during instruction time on the carpet; who doesn't like to be organized?

Because our district's funds have been cut, again, purchasing materials, texts, and resources have become a hardship.

We have resorted to buying materials with our own funds. If donations and support are provided for this project it will alleviate financial and emotional stress on both our families and our school budget. Our PTA is very supportive, however they can only provide each teacher so much. Students will have the opportunity to use top-notch materials to complete this task.
