Opportunity Knocks

My students need a way to interact via Smart Board without having to leave their desks. The Wireless Slate will allow them to do just that!

My Students

Have you ever had opportunity knock, but no way to take advantage of it? Many students with severe disabilities are unable to move around in the classroom. In this case, it is my job to bring the classroom to them. A wireless slate would help my students to interact without leaving their seats!

I teach middle and high school students in grades 6-9.

My students attend a self-contained class most of the day due to their severe cognitive learning disabilities. Although middle school aged, many of the students that I teach are not on grade level and require instruction at a much slower pace. I use my Interactive Whiteboard on a daily basis for lessons and student interaction, but there are still some students that are unable to participate due to limited mobility. These students often feel left out and excluded in a room full of other special needs students. There are also students in my classroom that love to use the Interactive Whiteboard, but have difficulties writing on it. These students are beginning to shy away from participating because they get easily embarrassed in front of their peers when they are unable to use it correctly. Having a wireless slate for the students to use would greatly impact their abilities to learn and participate in the classroom.

My Project

The possibilities are endless in any classroom environment when the right technology is in place! If my project is funded, then ALL students can begin participating in EVERY lesson. Some students in my classroom love going to the front of the room to use the Interactive Whiteboard. Others simply cannot due to limited mobility or poor hand coordination. The wireless slate would be a new opportunity for these students. The slate can be placed in front of the children with limited mobility allowing them to participate just like the students capable of walking to the front of the classroom. Students would no longer feel embarrassed in front of others when they are unable to interact. The wireless slate would be closer to paper and pencil! The opportunity would also be there for our Occupational Therapist to use the slate when working with my students. I can only imagine the freedom that the wireless slate would give to many of my students.

Any donation to a student is worthwhile!

Our educators who are continuously receiving pay cuts are asked daily to do more with less. Having this project funded would allow my students to do just the opposite; more because they have been provided with more! My students may need many adaptations and modifications to learn, but they can definitely learn. It is up to me to provide them with the tools needed to do it. I believe in my kids...I need you to believe, too!
