My Students

Remember when you were young and you wanted to change the world? Hoot offers students positive and negative examples to change their world. My students will learn that they can make an important, effective, constructive change in their own environment by following the positive role models in Hoot.

I have awesome students.

They have a tremendous amount of energy, lots of great ideas and big hearts. Our Florida public school is twelve years old and crowded with over 1300 students. My students have plenty of suggestions to improve their educational experience and are beginning to develop an understanding of civic awareness. They just need a little constructive support and guidance to encourage them to focus their efforts and make positive changes.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the book HOOT and the audio disk to help my reluctant readers. This book is perfect for my students. The story takes place in a Florida middle school like ours. The characters might be found in our hallways. Their adventures will help my students realize how to work with adults to effect positive student led changes including; setting a goal, creating a plan -step by step-, organizing, supporting and achieving their goal. Students will develop a plan to effect a change in our school or community. They will execute their plan working with adults as they try to affect change. Students will learn that civic responsibility is hard work but worth the effort.

Students today need to learn positive proactive ways to influence their community.

The skills they learn from this exercise will help them become well-prepared citizens ready to vote and influence their political landscape in a constructive helpful manner. Maybe they'll even run for public office!
