20/20 Books And S'mores

My students need exposure to grade level, quality fiction and non-fiction literature, even though they may not be reading on grade level independently.

My Students

If a student can wear a pair of headphones they can listen to an audio book, even if they cannot read the book themselves. The exposure to good literature may light a fire in them that will encourage them to read independently and on grade level. My boys, especially, need this encouragement to read.

Our school is a Title 1 school located in a rural area.

The town was once a booming textile center that, like so many small towns, has lost jobs and the textile industry to out-sourcing. Because of the loss of job opportunities, students are living in poverty and the parents are not able to purchase books for their children to read. Because I have such a wide range of reading levels in my classroom, it is hard to keep books on all levels in the classroom library. Not only are the children on different levels, they also learn in different ways. According to the Burke's Learning Style inventory given at the beginning of the year, one third of my students are auditory learners. Each child in my class wants to learn and wants to read. They enjoying reading and I want them to be exposed to quality literature by any means possible. It is my hope that they will have a love of reading, that they do not currently have, when they leave my classroom.

My Project

Each year the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL) nominates 20 books in four age-range categories; picture book, children's book, junior book, and young adult book awards, for the students in SC to vote on. For the past three years I have been encouraging my students to read all 20 Children's Book Award books. I have also offered rewards/awards if they read all the books. Each year I have had a few students that read all the books. However, because the books are written above some of my students’ reading levels, even if they want to read all 20 books, they are not able to. That is why the donation of audio books as well as hard copy books for our classroom would be so awesome. This would enable ALL students to enjoy each book.

Interesting, high quality, current literature is expensive and unobtainable for most students in my school due to the financial situation they live in.

Therefore, your support will introduce and reach students in a high poverty area of South Carolina. The donation of these reading materials will help “turn kids on” to reading. When the students read 20 books and get 20 stickers they will be able to participate in a s'mores party. A sticker chart is in the hallway documenting the books they read.
