My Students

Remember the feelings you got when you were able to participate and write ideas down for the class to see? My students love to participate and want to take more ownership of their learning. Our current easel stifles their participation-it's too high and doesn't have lines to help them write.

I teach fabulous first graders in a Title 1 school.

They are excited to come to school each day and we have created a safe and friendly community in our classroom. We have a wide variety of learning styles and abilities in our classroom, and we work hard to support and encourage each other to achieve success. We participate in Writers' Workshop daily. During this time we participate in Opening, Work Period, and Closing. Opening and Closing Meetings are conducted at the rug and are a time where we teach, model, and demonstrate/discuss concepts targeted that day. The students desperately want to be able to access the easel daily, but it's too high and doesn't have lines to allow for them to share their words and ideas easily.

My Project

Each day we participate in Writers' Workshop with enthusiasm. The students love to actively participate in the opening and closing meeting process, but our current easel does not easily facilitate their participation. This new easel will allow the students to directly access material we are working on during opening meeting and allow them the opportunity to directly write on the easel. The mobility of the easel (which we do not have now) will also allow us the flexibility to work in different areas of the classroom. Help me to put the power of participation into my first graders' hands. Allowing them the ability to directly access material any where in the classroom and the opportunity to directly write on the easel will help give them more independence and allow them to take more ownership of their learning.

Help me to put the power of participation back into my first graders' hands.

Giving them the ability to access the easel will allow them to share their words and ideas "easel-y" every day. They will gain independence and their pride will increase from being able to participate directly in the writing process.
