Wow Word Wizard Vocabulary Building

My Students

Each Monday I appear on the announcements at our elementary school as the WOW WORD WIZARD. I introduce the WOW word of the week. Students and teachers focus on the new vocabulary word and students turn in their entry using the WOW word correctly in a sentence in order to build vocabulary skills.

The WOW WIZARD reminds students to pay attention to new words..."They are all around...".

I include tips for parents in our family newsletter to involve them in helping our students build their vocabularies. Our students are very enthusiastic and look forward to learning the WOW word of the week. Each week, 3 entries are drawn from K-2, 3-4, and 5-6 and announced on Fridays. Students come to the reading office in the library to claim their prize. Currently the prizes are some fun books, picture and chapter books, as well as pencils, finger puppets, and school banners. I'd love to offer some more substantial prizes to keep students motivated. My idea for the end of the year prize is that if students can use EVERY WOW word from the school year correctly in complete sentences they can enter in the drawing for a KINDLE. Students with strong vocabulary skills will improve their reading and writing skills as well.

My Project

I went to the Online store connected to the website requesting several fun learning games, Leapster Readers, Sidewalk Chalk, Pick Up Sticks, etc, for some of the weekly prizes. I would also greatly appreciate an Amazon Gift Card Donation to help supply the grand prize of an Amazon Kindle. It would be even more exciting if I could have more than one grand prize winner at the end of this school year.

Vocabulary skills and word knowledge will help our students across the curriculum as well as later in life.

Our students will be better readers, writers, and speakers with more word knowledge. This will lead to more opportunities throughout their lives, for example, college applications, job applications, job interviews, and the list goes on. I want to get students exciting about words, and in effect excited about reading and learning.
