My Students

Will you be the person someone thanks at the "Oscars -School Edition" this year? It could happen! 150 unknown, potentially award-winning, film makers are just waiting to be discovered. With your help they could walk the red carpet this June at their own family premiere, and later at the award show.

Most of my students are like the middle child whom often do not stand in the limelight due to the achievements of the older child, or the needs of the younger child, but who do have dreams and needs of their own.

They go to a school that does not qualify for funds to help the disadvantaged, nor is it economically advantaged. Their teacher knows, however, that her students are far from common, ordinary, or average, and have not reached the limit of their potential yet! The research skills they will learn with this project can help them be even better readers and thinkers as they leave passive learning behind. This project will inspire them to challenge themselves since it is a permanent, made to be shared, culmination of their year. They will learn valuable technology skills, and develop an appreciation of (and possibly love for) documentaries on the History Channel.

My Project

Students in my class learn atlas skills, map making, and the geography of the regions we cover. We study pre-history, early civilizations, and the agricultural revolution. We learn how social class, government, writing, laws, technology, religion, and the economy began. The learning that happens in my classroom forms the basis for understanding our state and national government. It also develops an appreciation for civic duty and global awareness. I want to take my students out of the role of being passive learners who observe history by reading about it in their textbook and then answer questions at the end of the chapter (which they promptly forget). Instead, I want them to take on the role of "historian" and "expert" and be actively engaged in making meaning out of their learning. e.g. I envision students providing voice-over narration as they pan over maps they have made, being a historical figure in an interview, and explaining their archaeological "findings" (which they made).

In June, students will have an opportunity to have a "Premiere" of their "Documentary" at home, complete with a red paper carpet, tickets for friends and family, popcorn, and a glamorous or debonair "Director" as the star.

The "Director" can make a "Thank You" speech at the end. At school, the teacher will hold an "Oscar - School Edition - Party" each class period to celebrate achievements, and hand out awards. The learning they do all year will matter and will be treasured in years to come.
