My students need 15 xylophones to supplement the recorders that they purchased and brought in. Not every student has a recorder, so the xylophones will be an alternative.

My Students

Do you remember how it felt to be the only person without something that everyone else has? Now, imagine that you are one of 15 students that doesn't have the same thing as everyone else. You can help those students to have an equivalent musical experience with this project.

My students come from a majority of single parent/grand parent homes in a school district that has no resources for the creation of music.

They attend an elementary school and are curious about how the world works. Although we try to provide an arts curriculum, that programming is limited by financial resources. Music funding has been cut repeatedly over the past five years, and as a result, instruments have fallen into disrepair with no chance of being repaired or replaced.

My Project

I have requested 15 xylophones for my students to use in music class. Xylophones can be used to teach reading music, creating/composing music, and playing in an ensemble (teamwork). Working with a partner, they can take turns as the soloist/accompanist, they can play as a duet, or they can combine with other groups to play progressively complex music. They will be given an outlet where there is NO WRONG ANSWER. No final exam. No government standard that tells them they "failed." Instead, they will have the opportunity to share their ideas with their partners and their classmates, and play on a concert for the first time. You can make that happen.

I hope that through this project, my students will learn about the power of creating music as part of a group, as well as the larger lesson of generosity.

Students in all grades will be able to play these, and this year I am teaching over 500 students! Thank you.
