My Students

Do you remember learning your ABC's in school and cutting and pasting pictures to go with the letter sounds? Today we still teach the ABC's, but our needs are so much greater. We have to reach out to our auditory learners, along with our tactile and visual learners. All children can learn!

I teach all day Kindergarten to non-English speaking children who are just learning how to read and write our language.

Learning to use the skills of reading and writing will open up a whole new world to these young students and brighten their future. My kids try hard (but don't get much help from home) and they are learning the basics from the books the school district provides. I want to take them beyond the basics by encouraging them to put their writing and reading skills to practice by implementing the "Ready, Set ….. Learn!" Project in our Kindergarten Classrooms. In order for our children to reach the national average, we have to work twice as hard because they come to us extremely low at the beginning of Kindergarten. Our school is in an impoverished area and the students are not provided with much at home, so as teachers we have to provide our student with all of the extras beyond the paper and pencil activities.

My Project

My students need engaging, hands-on, developmentally appropriate phonics games, activities and books to support and extend their learning throughout the year. I have requested exceptional resources that will support their learning. For example, the Giant Tracing Letters and Stamping Letters will allow students to practice saying the letters with a partner (auditory), tracing/stamping the letters (visual/tactile)and they will also be able to create simple words with the stamps. With the Alphabet Sound Tubs the students will work in pairs to practice their beginning sounds. Parent helpers and "Big Buddies" will be able to work one-on-one with students needing extra assistance with letter recognition, when they use the "Lots of Ways to Learn Letters Activity Kit." As you can see, there are endless possibilities as to the benefits these hands-on activities can offer my Kindergarten children.

I try my best to be as creative as possible with my teaching, by offering my students a variety of materials to meet their learning styles - especially at this crucial early age of development when you want them to love to learn!
