My Students

Sam Cooke sang, "Don't know much about history... Don't know much about geography." My students often have the same sentiment as Sam. Help me change their minds. I want to take geography from drab to fab with art, literature, and games! What at wonderful classroom it would be!

I serve 78 amazing fourth grade students.

Our school is a small neighborhood public school. My students are diverse intellectually, ethnically, culturally, physically, and economically. Most students live in the community around the school. Some of my students live in the inner city and in rural areas outside of the city. My students love to learn and learn best when they are actively engaged. Unfortunately, I don’t have classroom materials that will make geography come alive in my classroom.

My Project

My students struggle with geography. This project will integrate geography, literature, and art to increase student achievement and enhance learning. The purpose of this project is to improve fundamental United States geography skills. My students will create and paint their own 3-dimensional United States map by using the Make-Your-Own U.S. Map Molding Kit and painting supplies. This 3-D map will allow the students to identify the United States’ most beautiful natural features from our majestic mountains to the mighty Mississippi. My students will read books from an age-appropriate literature library to improve literacy skills and bring geography to life. The U.S. States & Regions Literature Library will help my students learn the location of all fifty as well as learn interesting and fun facts about America. My wonderful 4th grade students will continue to build geography skills by playing U.S.A. Bingo.

The world isn’t flat.

Geography shouldn’t be either. I want to make my students excited about learning the unique physical features of the United States through art and literacy. Taking Geography from Drab to Fab will give my students meaningful learning experiences that will allow them to gain and retain knowledge. Please help me give my awesome 4th grade students an educational experience they will remember forever.
