The Power of Language

My students need 14 dictionaries as we have required vocabulary instruction weekly. I have dictionaries that are falling apart and are outdated.

My Students

Dictionary Definitions. A string of exhales can be heard through the classroom. Defining word meanings, learning how to pronounce words, and discovering the roots of words are paramount to a teacher and more importantly, to learners of the English language.

We are a school in Washington State that has a population of over 50% receiving free and reduced lunch.

This presents a unique set of challenges for teachers to meet in helping our students achieve on the state tests, and for life after high school. We have 9th through 12 graders in our comprehensive high school and have been awarded the state's "A School of Distinction" award for three consecutive school years. We strive to provide a top-notch education for all students. Part of our school's mission states, "All students can achieve." As a classroom teacher, I can attest to making that a daily goal in each of my lessons.

My Project

As a part of our required curriculum students are assigned ten new word meanings each week. Students are assessed weekly and each six-week term. The assessment includes using the words in a sentence and matching the correct definition. The first step for gaining an understanding is having each student define each word and use each in a sentence correctly. Dictionaries provide the pronunciation, part of speech, and definition. This resource is important, especially in our school where access to on-line resources is limited.

There are a variety of teaching techniques to explore new word meanings.

Regardless of what strategy is used the dictionary is critical in establishing a foundation. Students prefer to use a resource that is current and in good, usable shape. I currently have dictionaries that have been duct taped and some are missing pages. New dictionaries would help provide motivation for students learning new vocabulary.
