Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

CSI, Criminal Minds, Snapped. These are the shows that students watch today. I bring the real forensics to the classroom and prepare students for the outside world. My class is a fourth year science that allows students to determine if they might want to get a job in this field. My class is hands on

I teach in a Title I school with the SES status of 75% of my kids being free lunch.

My class allows these students the ability to see some of the real outside world. I have a mortician, police officer, and fire marshal come and talk to the students about actual crime scenes. I also take the students on a Forensic university for a field trip in the department and the ability to talk to actual FBI, CIA, and CSI employees. The students love to talk to these people and find out about actual cases. Even the kid who "never" asks questions will talk to these people. At the end of the year my students will tell me that they enjoyed the class and are going to tell their friends to take it. When I started I only had 47 the first year. Now three years later, I have 106 students of the 187 seniors. I love being able to reach the "unreachable and unwanting learner."

My Project

The resources that I have ordered will complete the project of the crime scene. These items include model bedroom, kitchen, living room furniture and accessories. The students will take the natural material and turn them into what the crime scene actually would look like. The students also use clay and make model bodies of the victims. They spend the time to make sure that the design is exact to the story so that when a person looks at the completed model home they can tell the story with out the written copy by all the detail. While they are working on this project the students also create a video podcast. In this podcast they play the parts of a news person, police office, victim, and witness. These videos are then saved for them to take to college with them in an electronic portfolio to show universities how they have used technology in the class.

I believe that this project is important because the students are given hands on time to create these houses.

They are very proud of what the do and they do not realize that at the same time they are also learning. I believe that we need to create lifelong learners and this project gives them the interest to keep researching and maybe facilitating their interest into the criminal justice system. My goal to to give the students the ability to be college and work ready in the science field.
