My Students

"When you see me molding or shaping sand, please don't let me hear you say, "He's just playing." For, you see, I'm learning as I play." This quote, modified from the poem "Just Playing", rings so true with what is at the heart of children in my kindergarten class today.

I teach a fantastic group of 20 kindergarten students.

Our elementary school is tucked behind a neighborhood in one of the fastest growing areas in South Carolina. Many of the parents both have to work a job each day, if not two jobs. Our kindergarten classroom is a safe and loving environment where the children can come to play and learn each day.

My Project

I am currently in my 8th year of teaching and I absolutely love to be around kindergarten students each day. What amazes me the most about them is just how much they can learn from play. By playing with blocks children learn about shapes and balance. By painting and drawing children learn to express themselves and be creative. By playing with puzzles children are learning to solve problems and concentrate. The new "play" center that I would like to implement with my students is a sand table. For that, I am in need of the sand! I am also requesting a molding kit so the children can create structures and buildings with the sand. With these materials, the students would be able to have sensory exploration (the feel of the sand) and learn about the natural nature of sand. We will add different elements to it such as water or rocks to see just what happens.

The ending of the poem goes something like this: "And when you ask me what I've done at school today, And I say, I just played," Please don't misunderstand me.

For, you see, I'm learning as I play. My work IS play!" Thank you so much for any donation that you can give to this project. I know the children will be ready to play and work and learn!
