Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of us have been blessed to have grown up in homes and schools that had plenty of books to read. Unfortunately, most of my students have not had that opportunity. Some groan when asked to read because they haven't yet explored enough books to find that one that captures their hearts and minds.

My students are amazing and wow me each and every day!

Most of my students are Hispanic and come from homes where their parents speak only Spanish. Over 55% of our school population is considered to be economically disadvantaged. These students have not had the opportunity to truly experience the gift of books and what they can do for them in their lives. My students love when we get to go to the library and they are able to browse the shelves for new books because it might be the only "new" thing they get to have.

My Project

With a variety of novels to engage a wide-range of student interests, I will be able to lead successful book clubs. Book clubs will allow my students to choose their own novel and they are placed into groups which are determined by novels they choose. This activity allows the students to teach one another about the text, and it's in those moments that my students teach me something which is invaluable. I enjoy giving students choice, something they do not get a lot of on a daily basis, and if they can choose a novel that interests them, they are more likely to become engrossed. I hope that through this process I will be able to teach them a skill that they will be able to use for the rest of their lives.

By donating to help build our classroom library, you will not only be putting books in the hands of children truly in need but also putting a love of reading and a new found confidence in their hearts.

It will also show them that, though life may not have shown them much of this yet, there are good people that care about these kids' futures enough to help provide them with the tools they need to rise above their circumstances and become the educated, successful people we know they can be.
